Welcome to your center for information about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This site is dedicated to the cause of getting the word out about DMD. It is my belief that anyone who understands the nature of DMD will feel the need to do something about it, and if enough people see this site, some difference will be made. What is Duchennes? |
Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy is the most common genetic disorder there is. About one boy in every 3500 is affected by the disease. Despite its relative abunance in the population, DMD is not a household name. The only association people might have with it is through the Jerry Lewis telethon that he has hosts each year to raise money to help those affected by the disease. DMD is primarly a disease that effects men. It is an X-chormosome related disorder that leads to an inability to produce the protiens that make up muscle membranes. This leads to a host of dehibilitating symptoms, which includes the loss of walking by the age of 13 and leads to death by the age of 20. |
